The Wheel Turns: Litha & the Magic of Midsummer
Tomorrow, the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, the days stretch to their longest, and the ancient world pauses to breathe in the golden light. The Summer Solstice — known in the pagan tradition as Litha or Midsummer — is one of the most powerful and celebrated points on the Wheel of the Year.
Whether you're a seasoned practitioner, a curious soul drawn to the old ways, or simply someone who feels the magic stir when the world is bathed in endless summer light — this is a day worth honouring.
What Is the Summer Solstice?
The Summer Solstice falls on or around the 20th–21st of June in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the moment when the sun is at its zenith — the longest day and the shortest night of the year. After this point, the days slowly begin to shorten again as the Wheel turns toward the harvest and the darker half of the year.
For our pagan and Wiccan ancestors, this wasn't just an astronomical event — it was a sacred threshold. A time of fire, fertility, abundance, and the full flowering of life's potential.
Litha in Pagan & Wiccan Tradition
In Wicca and many pagan paths, the Summer Solstice is called Litha — one of the eight Sabbats that mark the turning of the year. It sits opposite Yule on the Wheel, and together they represent the eternal dance between light and dark, the Oak King and the Holly King.
At Litha, the Oak King — ruler of the waxing year and the light — reaches the peak of his power. But even at his height, the Holly King stirs, ready to take the throne as the days begin to wane. It is a moment of glorious triumph and bittersweet turning.
Midsummer has long been associated with:
- 🔥 Fire magic — bonfires lit at dusk to honour the sun and burn away what no longer serves
- 🌿 Herbs and healing — St John's Wort, lavender, and mugwort are gathered at their most potent
- 💛 Love and fertility — a time for handfastings, romance, and celebrating abundance
- 🌸 Faerie magic — the veil between worlds thins at Midsummer, and the fae are said to walk freely
- ☀️ Sun worship — honouring solar deities such as Ra, Apollo, Lugh, and Áine
How to Celebrate the Summer Solstice
You don't need an elaborate ritual to honour this sacred day. Here are some beautiful ways to mark the longest day:

🌅 Rise with the Sun
Set your alarm and greet the sunrise. Even a few quiet moments watching the dawn is a powerful act of reverence. Breathe in the morning air, feel the warmth on your face, and set an intention for the season ahead.
🕯️ Light a Candle or Bonfire
Fire is the heart of Litha. If you can safely light a bonfire, do so at dusk and dance around it — or simply light a golden or orange candle on your altar. Write down what you wish to release and let the flame transform it.
🌿 Gather Herbs
Midsummer is the peak time for harvesting magical herbs. Lavender for peace, St John's Wort for protection and joy, chamomile for the sun's energy. Dry them, make a tea, or bundle them into a smudge stick.
🔮 Work Your Magic
The energy of the Solstice amplifies spellwork beautifully. Focus on abundance, confidence, love, creativity, and protection. Solar energy is at its most potent — use it.
🌻 Create a Solstice Altar
Decorate with sunflowers, marigolds, citrine crystals, golden candles, and symbols of the sun. Add herbs, a chalice of mead or elderflower cordial, and anything that speaks of summer's fullness to you.
🧘 Meditate & Reflect
The Solstice is a moment of pause before the turning. Sit quietly and ask yourself: What has blossomed in my life since Yule? What am I grateful for? What do I want to carry forward into the harvest season?
